Cervical Cancer Treatment

It is possible to treat cervical cancer through various procedures and if the cancer is detected at an early stage and treatment is started immediately, there are chances of full recovery. Read on to know more about cervical cancer treatment.

When the cancer is confined to just the exterior layer of the cervix, it is called limited noninvasive cervical cancer and here doctors/surgeons will remove the abnormal cancerous cells on the cervix. There is no need for any additional treatment at this stage. Noninvasive limited cervical cancer can be removed through the following procedures –

  • Hysterectomy

This one is a major surgery. It will remove the uterus and the cervix, the precancerous areas and the cancerous cells. However it is not used in a widespread manner, but is a viable option for only a few selected cases.

  • Cryosurgery

Here precancerous and cancerous cells will be frozen to death and killed. This is done at the last stage when all other surgical procedures listed here have failed. The process is similar to laser surgery. A cramp like pain will ensue after this surgery is performed. The abnormal cells will be frozen using nitrous oxide or carbon dioxide. It is more effective than laser surgery because it covers a greater area.

  • LEEP or loop electrosurgical excision procedure

Here cancerous and precancerous cells will be cut out with precision from the mouth of the cervix through electrical current that can slice as sharply as the knife or scalpel of the surgeon. The electric current will be passed through a wire loop or electric rod. This process is also known as electrocautery.

  • Laser surgery

Here precancerous and cancerous cells are killed or burned through a narrow beam of concentrated laser ray.

  • Conization or cone biopsy

In this type of surgery that portion of the cervical tissue where the abnormality is housed will be cut out in a cone shaped piece. A surgeon’s scalpel will be used to remove that tissue.

  • Invasive Cancer

Invasive cancer has penetrated deeper than just the outer layers of the cervix. The treatment also has to be more extensive depending upon which stage of the cancer the patient is at this moment. If there are other kinds of health complications, those have to be taken into account. Your own treatment preferences will also be paid some importance.

There are 3 processes of invasive cervical cancer treatment.

- One is the well known chemotherapy.

- The second is radiation.

- The third is hysterectomy where the infected uterus will be surgically removed. It has 2 sub types – radical hysterectomy and simple hysterectomy.
